IDE - SATA II upgrade

Ok sata 2 drives are looking more and more inviting to me.
My question is this

Can i plug a new sata 2 drive into my machine, boot form my old IDE drive then copy everything from the IDE to the SATA drive.
Turn off . Take IDE drive out and boot from the SATA 2 drive

Is this possible or is a windows reinstall needed on the new drive?

Short answer, Absolutely.

The majority of hard drive manufacturer`s have programs that will migrate all your data off the IDE and move it to the SATA hard drive.

I have done this myself, but I did notice a few small glitches in Windows after I made the switch. I ultimately wiped the drive clean and started a fresh install, but I also did that because I was upgrading to Vista.
