This mainly depends on the board more then anything. If the board is intended for strictly sata with only one ide controller for optical drives the installation generally goes on easily. But when having two ide controllers you first have to set the bios to sata/raid otherwise the ide controller will override sata by default. If the drivers for the sata controllers don't load correctly and fully from the floppy disk used the XP installer will fail to detect the sata drive at times.
I recently tried helping a friend out when he tried getting a 200gb sata drive running as the stand alone drive. For some reason the drivers wouldn't take off of more then one floppy as well as multiple downloads of the needed drivers. The XP installer failed to even detect the drive. It may have been simply a bad cable but?
I finally convinced him to run a smaller ide drive I had lying around as a spare to see if the new build had any problems. He is still running that drive and refuses to add the sata in to be partitioned and formatted for another go at it!
