What the deal with mother boards that have
IDE : ultra dma
&
IDE: ATA

My mother board has IDE : ultra dma
If i got one that had the ATA what changes would have to make inregaurds to changing my set up from ultra dma to ata. What is better?

The one you are referring to is PATA and the new HDDs come with both SATA and PATA, of which the SATA interface is faster and brings other advatages. Ultra DMA is the fastest possible transfer mode of the PATA interface as far as I know. However I beg someone to correct me if I am wrong.

. Loosely speaking:
- udma is a transfer spec
- ata is a physical spec (just like ide is)

my mother board has ide : ultra dma

this means the connectors conform to ide and the transfer protocols conform to udma.

if i got one that had the ata what changes would have to make inregaurds to changing my set up from ultra dma to ata. What is better?

UDMA and ATA are effectively synonamous
