I'm curious as to what you think about these laptops and possibly, the way I configured them. Any comments and advice or whatever are greatly appreciated. :)

I would go with the Dell... it has better memory and more hard drive space. Plus, from Dell I think a DVD burner upgrade costs only like $24 or something like that.
 
I'm trying to spend no more than $1000, and I'd be using it for school (web browsing, microsoft word), no gaming. At first, I was contemplating between Dell's Inspiron 1405 and HP's dv2000t. Is this particular HP one not so good? I read something on CNET reviews about the Inspiron 1405 having some keyboard issues, so I was leaning towards the dv2000t. Now that I think of it, I could go for a Acer laptop. Are there recommendations for a particular one, given that I'd just be using the laptop for schoolwork?

Any laptop in that range will do for your needs, and exceed them for awhile.
Might I suggest looking into Lenovo, those are some serious laptops. They are extremely durable(for what they are) and well priced.
 
My suggestion is buy the cheapest laptop you can with a motherboard that you like, and upgrade it yourself. Often, upgrades like going from an 80GB HDD to a 120GB HDD, or from 512MB RAM to 1GB RAM, cost more than the upgraded item itself. If you buy the hard drive separately and install it yourself, you'll save money, and then you could eBay the smaller hard drive and save even more.
 
Yeah, what he said is true in alot of cases, not neccesarily with an online configurator though. Usually with a store bought laptop it is pretty easy to do it yourself for less money if you look into it at all.
