IE & Media Player - Close Automatically Once Opened

Hi - can anyone help with this problem if they have came across it.

just out the blue my partners laptop (xp) has started closing various programs automatically once they are opened, they open up and switch right back off.

I have ran malwarebytes, ccleaner, easycleaner, removed programs, updated software - not sure what else to do.

any suggestions?
 
Has any new software been installed on that machine lately? Boot to safe mode and see if it still does it.
 
Run windows updates and make sure you have the latest version of both software and see if that fixes it. if not try uninstalling them through add remove windows components and reinstall them... re run windows updates and that should take care of it.
