If i was to...

If you Format the drive then yes they should, unless you have a BIOS virus(which i doubt). Also if you are on a network, you should check the other systems for virus's too.

If you have Backed-up your emails and other documents, beware that they may be infected too, and thus re-infect your fresh install once you load them back on.

about the network thing...i think one of the other comps in our house does have a virus so do u think maybe thats how i got it (and therefore i will get it again after reinstaling)?

Possibly, however most dont spread that easy across networks.

If you reinstall, do it with out connecting the network(or just turn the other PC off), untill you have installed an anti-virus program and any OS updates available.

avg is a good and free AV program. so it might be easer to download a copy and scan you computer with AV (avg free, avast) and antispyware (ms defender) programs then formating and reinstalling

It depends if it's a virus or just an error. Some people mistake an error for a virus and eventhough a format was done, it still occurs. Such as a hardware related issue. If you know forsure that it's something that could easily be rid of, a format should iron it out clean. Other than that, if it's just one typical virus or problem, it's probably best to just try to sort it out.
