Hi my friend has a macbook. She was having a problem booting it up. the screen would just go black and nothing would happen when powered on. she took it to best buy to have it diagnosed. They told her it was her motherboard and that the laptop was basically useless now. they said it would be cheaper ot buy a new one rather than fix it. I find this hard to belive. Is it possible to fix it? and if so how hard of a task is it?

Depends on how old the macbook is I would guess. If the cost to repair it is more than it is really worth, then yeah it would be not a good idea to have it repaired. However, I had my motherboard die in my laptop back in September and Asus took it back, replaced the board, no charge, and shipped it back in a matter of days. I would imagine Mac has some type of warranty on that laptop.

could be something simple as bad ram. use memtest or use ram 1 stick at a time assuming you have more than 1 stick in there.

best buy isn't always correct. youtube it

If the mainboard really is bad, then I would agree with the fellow that spoke with you since it is an Apple product. If it were another product, it could probably be fixed for $200-300.

Yeah, I wouldn't put faith in a Best Buy diagnosis. Maybe she can find a certified Apple repair tech in her area? Get a second opinion?

If MacBook is out of warranty, look for the nearby Mac shop and get a quote on repair the laptop.

You may try swapping ram and see if the laptop POSTs and give you video signal.
Have you try using the external desktop monitor to see any output video signal?
Please tell us more about your laptop, any LED or fan activity when powering on? any beep sound?

Hope this helps!
Bill
