I'm getting a laptop, and am thinking about getting an EV-DO card, but I'm confused.

Hey, I was wanting to get an EV-DO card, but just so I don't get dissapointed after paying $60, what exactly is an EV-DO card? If I got one, would I be able to get online at my mom's house, with no hot spots near by? Also, I'm going to California starting this Friday, would I be able to get online on my trip, like while in the car? Please help me clear this up, thanks. Also, if you have any suggestions for a good EV-DO card, tell me as I'm pretty much new to wi-fi on laptops.

EDIT: After clicking on a link on a page I was looking at, I noticed there's a monthly charge, is there any EV-DO cards that don't have a monthly charge or the monthly charge is inexpensive? If there's not an EV-DO card with no/low monthly charge, what's a really good wireless card?

Also, I don't really want to make another thread, are Maxim laptops good? I think that's the company my mom said anyways.

Hi bam, i have had a evdo card for almost a year now, and they are really nice to have for travel. FYI they work through a cell phone company but the exact signal is not the same as MOST cellphones (although some of the newer ones do have the "EVDO" connection avalible.

also, the evdo or "DO" connection is rare, and u most likley will only get that connection in a BIG city. the evdo is the faster connection of the two, but more hard to come by, the usuall connection is the "1x", it is slower but works just about EVERYWARE. i currently use mine while ridding in a truck with my dad, so about your trip to cali, it should be great for you.

u will want to make sure of your coverage area by asking the company u use for a exact map of there coverage. most of them have contracts with other companies so no matter who what company "owns" the tower they will let u "into the service".

and yes there is always a monthly charge just like a cell phone. and as far as wich is better or not, im not entirely sure, i have only used the kyocera one from alltel.

hope this LONG responce helps, i tryed to give as much info as possible cause it took along time for me to learn it from trial and error.

Okay, so they're all subscription? I don't think I'll be getting one till I get a job than, my mom got a wireless card anyways, and there's a bunch of hot spots I used to connect on my PSP, so I'm sure I'll be able to find a lot in my range, says 400 ft, but I'm not 100% sure I believe that, I'm expecting like 200 ft at the most.

Umm i think your thinking of it as a wireless internet for your computer... it is totally dif system. it will work off the cellphone towers in your area. so anywear you can use your cellphone you should be able to use your evdo card. so will be much better than your psp.

P.s. sry for the long delay on a second answer
