the battery is there for the bios, which has all the important hardware settings for your mobo. If the batery goes flat, the bios will lose all the saved settings like the date and time, boot sequence etc.
 
BIOS battery saves bios information for example bios passwords and even time infomation i think it does more thou?

also if it dies u lose that data
 
a while, they don't have to put out much power, i'm typing this off the family computer(5 years old now, hasn't had any problems)
 
I used to have some Pentium 1 systems that probably came out near 1995 that worked all the way to 2004 when i finally threw them out.
