I'm not sure what I want to do...

Which do you think would be the best option?

Alright, it's been several months since I sold my laptop so I figure it's about time for me to get one again, (for those that dont know, I usually buy a new computer every few months, lol). But I haven't decided what I want to do, and as i'm in no real rush hopefully I wont do something I regret. And I also dont have a whole lot of money to waste, so dont say buy a nice laptop and keep what you have.

So anyways, I basically have 3 choices here.

1. I buy a cheap (under $500) new laptop, which would be a dual-core, 1GB +, 80GB +, and integrated video. And I keep my current desktop computer for games.

2. I buy a higher end laptop ($600-$800), which would be a dual-core, 1-2GB, 100GB +, and a GeForce Go 7600 video card. But because it's more expensive, I would sell a few of my desktop parts for lower end components, such as a 7900GS and no PPU or sound card.

3. I go all or nothing, I buy a desktop replacement laptop ($1,000-$1,500) which would be a dual-core, 2GB of RAM, 160GB +, 8600M GT or better video card. And I would then sell all the major components of my current setup, and stick the rest in my closet for when I decide to buy a desktop instead.

I've been thinking pretty hard about this so far, and for #1, I was looking at a $479 laptop from Compaq, which is an AMD dual-core, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, integrated video. For #2, I found a laptop for $775 that has an AMD dual-core, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, and a 7600. I havent found anything for #3 yet, but it would probably be a Dell or HP with an Intel C2D, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, and an 8600M.

Keep your desktop, you know as well as i do that laptops can never match desktops in performance, dependablity and repairability and upgradeability

I know I have a nice desktop, and IMO, theres really no difference between a $450 laptop and a $700 laptop if they both have integrated video, besides maybe having a slightly larger HD. As for the desktop replacement option, I know they have no where near as much power compared to a desktop, so thats one of the downfalls to spending over a grand for a laptop.

I really like the Compaq for $480, but it's not on sale so i'll wait a week or so and see if theres something else that pops up in that price range that would be better. I checked out Newegg but they dont have any good laptops in that price range.

Even if I buy a cheap laptop, i'll probably sell my PhysX card since it serves no use to me.

Keep the desktop the way it is now. Why do you need a high performance desktop AND laptop?

I wouldn't, which is the reason if I bought a high powered notebook, it would be in place of the desktop, or in the case of #2, a mid-ranged laptop would mean downgrading some components.

Save your money for better desktop components IMO. Get a better processor, and the 8900GTX should come soon enough. :D

(Actually I have no idea on the 8900. When is that coming out? Hopefully not soon, I enjoy having my 8800!)

Oh, and toys like this 750GB hard drive! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136131

My desktop is perfectly fine, lol. I know I have the E6400, but since I have it at 3.3Ghz theres nothing better "stock" then this. I would not upgrade my video card though, lol. If anything I would buy another 2900XT. I'm also happy with my 640GB of storage :P

Circuit City has that same laptop for $450 now, so i'm pondering whether I should get it or not...

I'd say get that laptop from CC. Like everyone has said your desktop is a very nice one and why change that? And with the addition of a "cheap" laptop you could have the luxury of surfing the web, writing papers etc etc in the comfort of a recliner or outside. Or if you dont really need a laptop and just have the itch to buy one..I'd hold off, why waste 450 bucks when nothing is really needed:)

Buy a cheap laptop and be over with the debate. By the way, how much money do you put into computers each year?!

lol, didn't I tell you to convince me not to buy one? :P

I actually went back and checked on my Newegg account, and since October of 2006, i've spent ~$4,000 from Newegg, but that doesnt include the laptop that I bought from Dell, or the parts from Newegg or this forum. Although when I do change computers, I sell my current parts so I didnt actually spend that much money.
