I've decided to rebuild my system to make it quicker and optimize it for gaming.

I'm planning on purchasing a new:
1. Motherboard
2. Processor
3. Power supply
4. Video card

Right now i have a pentium 4 2.8 ghz processor with 2 gigs of ram and a Radeon 8500 series video card.

Any suggestions on how i should rebuild my system and which brands/parts to buy?
I'm pretty inexperienced and don't know a whole lot.
Also: Not tryin to break the bank :good:

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks.

well i've done some research myself and i came up with this:

BIOSTAR TA790GXE 128M AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor Model ADX620WFGIBOX

XFX PVT95GZAFG GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card

OCZ StealthXStream OCZ400SXS 400W ATX12V Active PFC Power Supply - Retail

I can get all that for about $265.

Would this be a good setup?
Feedback appreciated
Thanks.

Depending of what are you going to be doing. If gaming I would stay away from Quads and get a better GPU, 9500GT is a dog of a card btw.....

Are you mad?

Quads are excellent for gaming,Most newer games are optimised for Multi core cpus...dual core is okay....but quad is better imo,Take gta iv for example,it doesnt run all that great on most dual cores so ive heard.

...you have a i7,how could you agree with him? :D

But to the OP definatly get a better GPU,8500GT is no good for gaming.

You currently have DDR2 RAM for reuse? If not go for DDR3

Motherboard + CPU combo - GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H + AMD phenomII x3 710
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.271893
$157
Power supply - OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W $70, MIR $25
Video card - $174 to spend. 4870 512MB @ $125 would be good choice.

My min set up would be
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H + AMD athlon II x2 240 $119

Consair 400W $50, MIR$20

ATI 4670 512MB $70

I just did what you are looking to do an hour ago. I bought

CPU $102: AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103680

With the motherboard below you can unlock the other two cores on this processor, and even if you dont unlock them you can overclock your cpu to a stable 3.7 ~ 3.9 ghz. So for $102 you have a wicked quad core.

MOBO $79:

This motherboard is very well featured and gets excellent reviews. Here is a review for it.

RAM & GPU combo $244: Radeon 4890 GPU and 2x2gb DDR3 GSkill Ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.265385

The 4890 is probably the best single GPU pre DX11 GPU that you can get right now, and the 4 gb of ddr3 ram is nearly the same price as 4 gb of ddr2.

So for $425 you have a sickkk system. Thats exactly what I did, and I also picked up some thermal grease and a wired xbox 360 controller for racing games

anybody know anything about the GeForce 9800 GT card?

And is it compatibale with BIOSTAR TA790GXE 128M AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard?

Biostar is not known for making quality motherboards. I would avoid the model you have chosen. Get the good quality motherboard recommended by GSAV55. Get the GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboard.

i have to agree with daisymtc, unless you have ddr2 ram thers no point in getting it unless you really want to save a little money, but even then ddr3 would be a good choice because itll help future proof you a little and itll run better for your games. also it is true that a quad core is the way to go. and that motherboard isnt a bad choice eithe because if you want to upgrade to a phenom II x4 later you can.

I'm just gonna say don't go for a Biostar motherboard, ASUS or Gigabyte all the way.

9500GT is a terrible card, never go lower than *600 on GeForce cards, i've made that mistake before, i saw no difference between an 8500GT and a 5200FX LOL, just don't.
