I got my first computer parts just now I have the video card, the cpu and the anti-static armband (which is really itchy). Can anyone tell me a first computer story (please nothing bad the last thing I need is something to make me afraid to put the computer together). I can't wait to get all the parts and see how good this thing works. If you want to know what I have look near the end of my thread called building computer need help.:D :D :D
EDIT: One more thing how does attaching your anti-static wristband to a computer case work? I used a multi-meter to see if my case can conduct electricity and it can't. Is it just the ones that conduct electricity or is it something else that makes it work?
EDIT...again: ok my anti-static armband isnt conductive if i put one contact on the clip and one on the part that touches my arm now im really confused.

Connect your antistatic armband to a ground it can be any ground.

When I built my first PC it went fairly well the only problem I had which wasn't a huge problem was connecting the Power supply to the mobo I didn't know how to wire it and the manual was a little confusing but I quickly figured it out.

I say go for it it's not that hard.

I have never had any problems building PCs, the only problems I have had were trying to repair old computers.

no, YOU carry a charge that can totally screw up your computer components. its to protect your investments. although you could just be really careful and you wouldnt have to pay 20 bucks for an armband

it was only 6 bucks. ok so the armband isn't supposed to be able to conduct electricity?

Lol

No the armband is to prevent static from damaging your components, especially sensitive components such as RAM etc. I never used it either, but it can help.

ok cool I mainly got it because i'm always working on computers for old ladies (don't ask) and even though the computers are old and bad the less parts I kill the more money I make well.....actually they've all been crap so all i've gotten from them was their old computer parts which I really dont want.
EDIT: also its better to spend $6 on a armband then $500 to replace everything.

When i built my pc last year installing all the hardware seemed very easy. Only problem i had was the BIOS configuration, it was set with promise controller on and sata when i was using a IDE hard drive..so it wouldnt boot from my hard drive and i couldnt install the OS. After about 1 day of research i found the problem and disabled them, aside from that the actual hardware assembly of a computer is very simple.

cool. I don't think i'll have any trouble i've done alot inside my old compaq experimenting seeing what it could do then one day i added a sound card and the power overloaded. kind of weird since i took away quite a few things when i did it.

My first computer build went good, except i placed the little stands that hold the motherboard off of the back panel or w/e it is in the case. Doing this could short out ur motherboard, lucky i had my uncle look it over before i tryed starting it and he caught it =P.

so what are you supposed to do with them?

If you're working on the monitor or powersupply (which i suggest you do NOT do) you NEVER use an anti-static wriststrap. For the PC itself you're fine, but PSU or monitor don't use it. It can actually kill you and work backwards of what it's supposd to do.

yeah I dont mess with monitors or TVs I have messed with a power supply but I know what to look out for. I like to take the fans out of broken PSUs and make it so i can plug them into a wall outlet.

sorta dangerous, but i have done it too.;)

yea the static charge is definitely not mythical we can all agree on that (haha red vs. blue - lopez) but ive never used the armband, i dont even know where to get one. ive built i think... 5 computers? and basically, just dont walk on a rug, keep touching the computer case, and dont wear socks and you should be fine.

the hardest part is cooling the cpu, but as long as youre using the simple stock hsf u should be fine. remember... MOBO IN THE CASE BEFORE U PUT THE COMPONENTS ON IT... haha dont laugh at me i did that the first time because i had to RMA my case... lol ok i guess its kind of funny... but it worked... however poorly!

Yuep, also never plug the PSU in when plugging in everything. Ive done that once, and i will never do it again. The metal contacts on the 4 pin molex cable somehow was stinking out some, and it shocked the hell out of my finger, it ran up my arm, and out my feet, to my psp case. After then i have been having headaches all the time.

haha does that count hacking a monitor picture tube up with an axe? I knew not to mess with the transistors and crap on the circuit board, tho.

I take the fans out of PSUs and hotwire them into computers
