Hey guys i have an image with a white background and what i would like to do is turn the background black and the text white can this be easily done with either photoshop cs3 or fireworks cs3 i have both of these.

Yup, you can either manually select the white background and make it black, or you might even be able to do a simple reverse of the colors.

how do you reverse the colors simply?

It'll be labeled Invert Colors and should be pretty easy to find in whatever app you choose to use.
