Imaging a hard drive?

Yea I'm curious how you image a hard drive, to like cd or something?

-Any free programs to do this that work good?
-Does it just image it to Cd then when you want to format back to that point where you imaged it just put the cd in and its just a couple clicks and saves you alot of time instead of doing a full format?
-Do lost of people do this?
-Is it like when I had a recovery partion on my computer when I got it? And itll just restore it to when i made the image?

http://www.clonezilla.org/ is a freeware drive imager. I believe it will let you write the drive image to any media that is big enough.

Thanks for the link! I wanna back up my hdd as I have alot of programs and games on it. Can I keep the clone on another hdd as a single file?

Yes, it should make a singe file that is the image of the drive it cloned.
