Import information Stuck on Old hard drive.. Solutions?

Hey Chaps just signed up here as i need a little help

Basically my old laptop died on me It turned off because it was overheating
(Fan issue)

The screen started going off
then the keyboard stopped
then it wouldnt accept the USB one until after main boot up which doesn't help when you had to select the OS at boot, was dual booting 7 and XP :cool:
then it stopped woring
Took it apart and and processor was cooked.. Nice thermal paste :eek:

All in all Im using a family laptop.. I'm not hugely Nerdy but i would like to say i know more than the average facebooker :rolleyes:

Anyway the problem being.. I realized i had important Password's saved on there in .txt files (i'm aware how unsafe this is) the main password is for my Google Adsence account that contains a nice deal of cash which is needed :P


It's a laptop so uses a laptop hard drive (Of course) I need a way just to view the desktop files on this HDD.. is there such device where it can be made Maybe a USB to the hard drive? what do they use standard 2.5? Not sure with laptops never been inside one properly.

I can't plug the hard drive into this laptop because I'd risk breaking it and they payed $1200 for it a few years back Acer aspire 6920 Yup the $500 one

Depending on what you want to spend... you can get a hard drive enclosure or a USB hard drive connection cable or a permanent case for the drive. Depends on what you want to do with that hard drive.


  1. If you were someone who had to scan a lot of hard drives or worked at a pc shop the better purchase would be for a large enclosure, like this Thermaltake Dual Hard Drive Docking Station for about $48.00 (plus shipping, warranty and etc...).

  2. Or this if you want to keep the hard drive as a semi-portable hard drive (I do this and I'd recommend this the best option for your situation). Rosewill External Aluminum Enclosure for about $13.00 (plus shipping, warranty and etc...).

  3. Or a hard drive connection cable that works with both 3.5" and 2.5" hard drives. This is not something you want to use to keep a hard drive connected all the time (...like for daily use). This is more for recovery/diagnostic/repair operations (it would be for recovery in your situation). But the great thing about this is that it's a great tool if something happens to another drive; then you're prepared! Vantec 2.5"/3.5"/5.25" SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter for about $20.00 (plus shipping, warranty and etc...).

Do what johnb35 and gamblingman told you.It is the only way.

I for instance use simple USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE cable when connecting hard disk drives wether they are from big desktop PC or from a laptop...


By the way do you mind taking a picture of the cooked processor and show us :D?

I have a desktop system, so my usual strategy is to hook up the laptop hard drive through SATA and boot up Ubuntu to access those files. idk if you have a desktop available, but getting Ubuntu is easy enough (if you have another computer accessible, that is) because you can download it and burn an ISO to a USB flash drive and boot Ubuntu from the flash drive.

I guess I'm just going to for the cheap USB to HDD option as it's only a 80gb hard drive and i have 2TB's of external connected to the family laptop for all my personal crap just need this password


will it just install as a drive when connected?
