Importing from outlook

Ive got a friend who before formatting his computer needed to save his Outlook information, but instead of exporting it, he has just copied a 20 meg .pst file, which he assumed to have the information. However when the file is imported Outlook says that it is not a correct personal folders file. Any ideas on how to access that information?

Make sure he imports it as a pst file, it should give you the option (after the "import from another file" dialog, there should be a list of importable file formats, scroll down to pst).

Yeah we have done that, and after selecting not to copy duplicates it shows a prograss bar as if it is importing, and then outlook crashes (tried several times)

sounds more like a corrupt pst file. Try scanning it with the Microsoft Scanpst utility, then retry the import. (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q287497/ )
