Improve resolution for LCD monitor

I have a LCD 22inch monitor (CMV 222H) and my graphics card is a GEForce 8800GT. My screen resolution is set to 1680 x 1050 but the edges of my icons on the left are cut off (most noticably when I'm on the internet).

A friend said I should buy a HDMI - DVI cable to fix this problem. I've bought one from Dick Smith. I wasn't sure whether I need to pull out the D-Sub cord currently connecting my graphics card to my screen? Or do I leave both in? I've left both in at the moment but it hasn't made a difference. Do I need to change the settings somewhere?

Sorry, I really don't know what I'm doing, but would really appreciate some help!!!

Thanks

Try a different resolution... bigger or smaller.

Try and figure out what your monitor's native resolution is and try it. Thought that resolution sounds about right to me. Other than that just try different resolutions like vk3cll said.
