In the search of a new laptop

I'm searching a laptop for my study but I've some doubts about it. First of all, I'm interested in the big brand like IBM and Dell, but I got confused in their many series and I cannot distinguish the R,X,T,G series of IBM and Inspiron and Latitude of Dell. I mean that how we can choose these models (in term of performance, price, stability, battery life, etc.) And comparing to Toshiba or HP, do they have any advantage ?
Last question is I have an offer to buy a Dell Latitude D600 for 1400 USD. Is it a good deal ?

I need to add some details of my search : I want to run some program like Matlab or Mathematica, so performance is important for me (in addition of the stability and the non out-of-date in the near time)

Since you mention performance and math apps in the same question, Intel is definitely out of the picture. You'll definitely want to grab an Athlon64 book if possible as to take advantage of the 64bit floating point hardware support. To my knowledge neither IBM nor Dell carry Athlon64 'books.

The 'book ive been considering picking up for myself is a eMachines M6807 (when i had the time to play with it, i wrote a quick synopsis: http://www.hazza.dsl.pipex.com/REVIEWS/R003.htm ). Ive been told Compaq carries Athlon64 'books too so that might be something you'd be interested in :)
