infected and constant reboot

My friend moved and gave me his Acer Aspire T180. It is full of vireses, trojans,ect. he could not get rid of. Everytime i turn it on the sustem boots up for a minute shows computer is infected then reboots. Can i stop the reboot so i can instal my own antivirus or do i have to take it in to have it cleaned?
