Inspiron Motherboard

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop (running xp with sp2) and I need to replace the motherboard. Because I have no clue when it comes to computers, how exactly should I go at this? My friend said he could fix it for me if I ordered a new one however I have no clue what to order. I checked out newegg and had no idea what motherboards were compatable. Can someone recommend a site or specific motherboard that would be compatable? Or is it even worth fixing? Dell said they could fix it but it would be about $500... should I go with that? Thanks in advance

A friend of mine's xps just had the motherboard go bad and the only place we could find that had a replacement was Dell. Motherboards for laptops are different than their desktop counterparts so I seriously doubt you will find anything on newegg or from anywhere else other than Dell for that matter that you can use. $500 does suck, and I'd still try looking around for parts (maybe someone else has your laptop with something else broken and you could get parts from that). But I'm afraid your options are probably limited.

Thanks for responding. A friend told me to look on ebay. I found some there but was wondering if those would be a good investment. I am kind of worried about "buying other peoples' problems".
