i was wondering if i could still open the cd drive even though there will be nothing on the hard drive?

The CD drive should open as long as the PC is on. Does your XP disk boot from the CD rom? You may need to enter your bios and change the boot sequence so it starts from CD.

as far as i know it should boot from the boot cd,i have reformatted my laptop before, and all i did was put the toshiba recovery/dvd drivers cd,that came w/my laptop into the cd rom,and i was able to reformat it from that.
