Install additional hard drive

hello, my pc has P5GD1 mobo, which only has one IDE channel. I have a SATA hard drive, and a DVD writer. Now i want to install my old IDE hard drive as a backup drive. But the only IDE channel is occupied by the dvd writer. I have considered connecting them on the same IDE cable, but the cable is not long enough to reach both of them. I saw two red IDE-like port on the board which I later found out were for RAID. Anyways, I was able to plug the hard drive with a standard IDE cable to that port. I reboot, went in BIOS, configured the port as IDE instead of RAID. But after i entered windows xp, it says found a new device and there was a pop saying "Mass Storage device", and that's it. I went into my computer, the new hard drive did not show up. Help me please, i really want to get it working.

are you sure that the hard drive is partioned? it sounds like its not...You can find out by. C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and its called "diskmgmt" it tells you about the hard drives you have installed and will tell you if it's not partioned.

Edit: if it's not partioned it will say "Unallocated"

well if u cant find it in ur disk management then u might wanan go back into ur bios and make sure that the port u have the hard drive plugged into is turned on or active. any by the way if u want an easier way to go to the disk management just right click on ur my computer icon on ur desktop go to manage and then to disk management at the bottom on the right side.
