I am running xp pro on a notebook and I have tried installing Spybot search and destroy. The app downloads ok and half way thru the install I get an error. I have attached a screenshot of the error.

Forget about installing spybot as its old and outdated, use Malwarebytes Antimalware instead as its a much better program.

reinstall issues

This has developed into something different. It looks like something is blocking me from downloading from microsoft. I get this page can not be displayed. Im trying to download microsoft silverlite. I looked and my system firewall is turned off. I tried going into safe mode to clean up anything that may be redirecting but can get into safe mode. When I go thru the pages of safe mode, the last sequence of safe mode jumps past the most important page and goes to a windows ogon and wont except any passwords. Help!

Oh man do I hate this problem. I've had it before. Turned out to be something infected the router. Connect straight to your modem and see if that works. If not, then at least your router is okay

I installed Antimalware and it installed ok but something is preventing it from running. I can go to the host file and open it with notepad and delete all the crap but as soon as i go to a brouser, all those deleted files come back. This thing has also disabled restore to a date. It never makes it thru. It also has screwed up google. You never get to where you intended. It continuously redirects to add sites.

Download and run the following program, however, when saving it rename it as combo-fix instead of the default combofix. Changing the name should allow it to bypass the malware and run. If not, try booting to safe mode and running it. If that don't work then download and run rkill.scr but don't reboot the system and then immediately after running rkill.scr and seeing the log pop up then retry combofix/malwarebytes.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Please post the combofix log as you still may have hidden infections which need to be removed.

Also post a fresh hijackthis log.

Hello, please download and post a log with HiJackThis.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
