i just reinstalled xp home on my laptop. for some reason before it loads the windows screen it shows a screen that ask which xp to load. it never showed the list before. its kind of like the list that shows up when you boot up in safe mode. Does any know how to prevent this from showing up everytime i boot.

Well when that happens, you must have installed more than one OS. However, if you are sure that you have not, and you still get this selection, what I would do is the following:

1. Get a Windows XP iinstallation CD
2. Boot from it and keep on pressing R
3. Select the recovery option
4. Once there, type this into the command prompt: fixmbr
5. It will ask you which disk you wish to do this for and give you a warning
6. Proceed and it should be done
7. Reboot

JAN :D

nope that didnt work. i used partition magic after i reinstalled windows and reallocated some unpartitioned space to my local disk. you think that has anything to do with it?

Try this maybe.

Go to system properties, advanced tab, startup and security button.

From here it should be intuitive. Just select the amount of time you want the list to show up, or disable. Whatever you like. That should fix it for you I think.

i had have this problem in the past... and this is what i think... [dont hold me to any of these]...

well, the reason that appears is that you DO have 2 systems set up on your pc... to remove it.. go to start.run.msconfig. then go to the BOOT.INI tab and look under "[operating systems]" .. the BOOT.INI is a text file you can view with Notepad. you have to edit/delete the other system...im not sure how.. forgot.. it should show you the two systems you have set up.. there is a way to remove it.. im not 100% sure.. but remember which system that works and set that one as default on the button below it.. reboot.. if it still shows.....go back to msconfig and set the timeout to 0 as everyone has recommended as thats all i know.. lol. if i remember..i'll get bakk with u

i wouldnt recommend doing this if you have had little or no computer experience. especially when

yups i understand you completely but dont that just removes the time it appears on your screen [dont hold me to it]... its not actually removing the other system. and i also posted a link that might guide him/her.

it doesnt remoe the other installation. but if you uncheck the os you dont want to load up, then it'll boot from just the one, without having to go through the selection screen

yups, but to me it seems they were just telling him to disable the time it was set to display thats why i brought in that whole idea of msconfig.. etc..
