Could anyone provide me information on how to install Windows 2000 professional after Windows Xp professional edition.
Quality information is desired.
Just did that in the past weekend on my laptop. I had a XP prof and I wanted to install Win 2K..
1. First, create a partition from your HD using partition magic. It is not a free software but you can get it free over the web with correct search strings.
2. Once you have created the partition, format the partition using NTFS.
3. Copy 2 files from your current winXP folder name c:\i386 (NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM) of refer to this site. It is a hidden file, so enable your folder setting to view hidden files)
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_2k.htm
4. Load your boot CD and start copying Win2k to the new partitioned directory.
5. When the Windows 2000 installation is done, boot the computer into Windows 2000, not Windows XP.
6. Copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM back to the root directory of your boot drive.
7. Now, you'll be able to restart your computer and boot into Win 2K or Win XP. This procedure is necessary because the Win XP version of NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM will boot Windows 2000, but not vice-versa.
OK quick TIP:
When I tried this, it did not work for me as it was telling me that more than 5 files were missing from to load winxp.. I am thinking maybe I messed up somewhere.. so if you get this error even after doing all the steps above.. do this
1. load your winxp boot cd
2. re-start your machine
3. Click on the propmt saying you want re-install winxp
4. install winxp on the appropriate partition
5. DO NOT RE_FORMAT when the propmt asks you..
6. The cd will basically just re-install all winxp files
7. Now you will be able to have dual boot without losing any files or setting from your winxp. When I say not losing any files.. you do not have even reinstall some softwares, everything starts normally... usually after you do a fix like this you will have to typically reinstall MS Office, and all other 3party applications you had.. but I did not have too.. so it's all good.
Good Luck .. Hope this gives a quality info...
