Installation problems

I just reformatted my mom's computer and put in the CD that came with it to install Windows XP but then whenever my mom tries to install Office XP it says she needs a newer version of Windows BUT before the reformatting the program was working and we've had the same OS for 5 years since we got the computer. Also when I try to install Bitdefender and Malwarebytes there's errors in the installations but those worked before the reformatting too.

How do I resolve this? There can't be a virus because I haven't gone on the internet on her computer since the reformatting.

Can you give us the exact error message for all three programs? All three of those programs should install fine on XP, even if it is unpatched/out-of-date...

What method are you going by to install Malwarebytes and BitDefender? CD? USB?

The exact message for Office XP is "Program requires a newer version of windows". For Bitdefender it also says that and I forgot what it said for Malwarebytes because I deleted it

I downloaded MWB and BD onto my USB drive and then put the install files onto my mom's desktop and then tried to install.

... wow ... that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You're 100% positive you installed Windows XP right? (forgive me for asking the obvious).

What is the exact error message, word for word? You're sure it's "The specified program requires a newer version of Windows." and not "This installation package can not be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service."???

Either way, I would connect to the Internet and download all of the latest updates for Windows (install a firewall first if you're not behind a router). Keep checking for critical updates from update.microsoft.com until it doesn't find any more. Then try to install your software again. Post back and let us know - I'm very interested to see how this works out...

Yeah I put in the CD Dell gave us when we got the computer and it says on it Windows XP Home Edition BUT I noticed before we reformatted the boot up screen only said Windows XP it didn't say Windows XP: Home Edition. I don't know if that makes a difference, it's possible Dell had a different version of XP on the computer when we got it. I mean we haven't reformatted it since we got it so we haven't had to deal with this crap until now

And yes that's the EXACT error message

As Dean says, update your XP first. There is a good chance that you had XP with SP1/2 and maybe 3 installed through updates but your install disk does not. Your "Office" may be looking for one of these SP updates.

Hi

I think you first you updated your windows xp through online .

i think that your problem may be solve .
thanks

You are missing the latest service pack, You need to install Service pack 2 then upgrade to service pack 3, This can be done though Windows Updates. Hint: any time you see a computer that says windows xp home edition, our windows xp professional during system boot, that is an automatic indicator that your computer does not have the latest service pack. Just run windows updates till all the updates are installed ( there may be quite a few ) once its updated and you see it says just Windows XP when you boot, You know its all updated to the latest service pack and then at that point go and try to install your software.
