Installed a new graphics card and now my computer won't boot

I installed a new gfx card into my computer and then the computer wouldn't boot. I took it out, along with other excess hardware to try and diagnose the problem, still no boot.

The mobo has power (indicator light is on) but won't boot (no fans or anything happening).

What's wrong and more importantly how can I fix it!?

We need more info. System specs would be cool. Mainly, the old card and the new, along with the power supply.

From what it sounds like, your power supply isn't up to par. Trying to use it with the new card may have damaged it.

Oh, and when you took the new card back out, did you try putting the old card back in?

((Woo! 2000 posts!!))

grats on 2000

mobo: msi x58 pro-e
psu: coolmax 700w
cpu: intel i7
ram: 3x2gb kingston
old gpu: radeon hd 4650
new gpu: xfx radeon hd 6850

no I haven't tried putting the old card back in yet. i tried removing everything, reseated the ram, only put 1 stick back in.

I guess ill try the old card again.

Hmm. This may seem like much to you, and some one may be able to offer some better advice, but this is what I would do:

Remove the motherboard from the case, and set it on an anti-static mat or card board.
Re-connect everything just like you would in the case and try to turn it on by touching the 2 power pins with metal.

This is just to eliminate the possibility that during your installation, you didn't short the motherboard with a static shock.

My mobo has a power button built into it. You think my mobo is shorting out on my case?

I don't think thats the case because the mobo power light is on.

Did you connect the 2 - 6pin pci express power connectors to the video card?
Also, I really don't recommend you to use that psu as its a cheap brand as a good 700 watt psu would really run about $100 and the coolmax psu is only around $50 at newegg. Definately get a different unit such as corsair, antec, xfx, pc power and cooling. And really you only need about a 600 watt unit which gives you some headroom for upgrades.

Agree with johnb35 about the power supply. After trying the new card and it didnt boot, plus it wont boot at all now. Have you tried resetting the bios? Plus unplug the power supply and hit the power button a few times to discharge it.
