Installed HL2...HD F***ed

I installed my version of Half-Life 2 yesterday. Got into the early stages of the game and it got stuck and the sound went very high-pitched.
I pushed the reset button. It booted up so far as the bootscreen then reset again... and it keeps doing it. Can't get past the bootscreen.

I put the HD in my comp (see below) from the comp that messed up and it did the same thing.

"HD problem" I decided.

I am on my comp (see below) at the moment. Had to install all the modem software and everything.

What can I do about the HD? If I need to make a back-up and re-install windows, how do i make a back-up (its the same as the one in my rig in my signature, might be 2MB Cache instead of 8MB though)?
If not then what should I do?

Cheers

install the bad HD as a slave in your computer and try to access the drive through my computer

I'm sorry. :D

Check that the sound card is firmly in the socket (seriously :P)

NOt entirely sure about what you mean but i think something like Norton Ghost would suit the task

Checked my sound card..all seems ok.
Ive hooked up the broked HD to my rig and I am able to access it. Everything is there and useable.
What could be wrong then?
I've run Panda Titanium 2005 on it and found some problems.

Any other suggestions?

Some hacking tools/progs, lots of ad-ware and spyware.
About 70 entries in total. I didn't get a copy of the report...guess i should have.

I tried booting from it again...same problem exists. Can't get past bootscreen without it resetting.

Well for starters (to rule out the obvious), consider dealing with the software problems? :) (possibly a reformat)

Well you'd have to backup your data first :) (unless its not important which i dont suspect is the case)... of course you can also install overtop the current OS (at which point ud lose the programs but you can save data ... i think.... or you can try a repair installation)

How do I do that? Without losing all the data on it?

just take all the stuff you need and copy it to another HD when you hook it up as slave then format and reinstall windows

Ok. I've tried using the backu tool on the Properties menu on the broken HD and it keeps getting stuck at certain points and only backing up bits of the drive.
Is there anything I can do to make it copy the HD regardless of what it's copying?

Cheers

try picking the directories you want and using the windows copy function to copy them over to the other drive

when you restart the computer and load off the xp cd, the windows setup wizard should give u a few choices, one being a fresh install...

this option fresh install, resets the o/s and the drivers, and should leave your programs and personal folders intact.

if it is an operating system problem and not another piece of software this should fix it...

could someone please confirm what i just said, for i have done it but not in a long time... i would not want to be misleading
