I just bought a new motherboard and i'm gonna use the hard drive i'm currently using. So do i just hook up the motherboard to the hard drive and it will ask me to reinstall XP and it will reformat the hard drive or how will this work exactly?

It will work exactly the same as before except MS will probably ask you to verify your KEY by calling them.

If you're just changing motherboards then you won't have to reinstall. You may need to reactivate the OS if Windows decides you've undergone a big enough change but that's it. Just plug it in and it should boot the OS

If there is an operating system already installed on that disk, then you need to format it first. Just make a Fdisk floppy. Then when you first boot the new motherboard have the floppy in the slot. When the _ prompt comes up type in fdisk. It will give you an option to reformat.

Or you can go to the website for the manufacture of your harddrive and look for their utility to reformat the drive.

Just google fdisk and you will find what you need to make a floppy.

Wow, three post in a minute.

Paratwa, you're saying he needs to format his HDD just because he's replacing his motherboard?

If it's a different chipset yes.

If you don't it will cause all kinds of problems.

Best thing to do is reformat and reinstall, Everythings clean that way.

Hmm, I see. I'd never done it before, and figured it was just pop-out, pop-in. Guess it can be more complicated than that, but what ever involving computers isn't? :)

You will need too reformat.

Each Motherboard has different Settings, Different Voltages, Different Chips.

You will encounter more problems running without reformatting, but i suggest you do reformat.

It May work without reformatting, But will have alot of problems down the line.

Yes you will need to reformat :D I have had computers that didnt need to reformat but I was just lucky. Installing that new motherboard is going to be like plug and playing your HDD.

I just assembled my PC myself with the help of my fren.In my case when done with assembling I boot the PC it tried to boot but crashed and showed me BSOD.So I just formated the old one reinstalled the XP again.

No, just pop your Windows CD in and boot to it after you've changed the MB out. You will then be able to delete old partitions, format, etc.

Install the motherboard and hook everything up. When POSTing go to CMOS and change 1st priority to CD or DVD drive. Pop the CD in and follow the instructions.
