installing a new video card

i just got a geforce 6600 256mb 8x agp card that is compatible with 2x AND 4X AS WELL (I HAVE A 4X). i popped it into the computer and the moniter just sits there and shows nothing. So i take it out, and try installing the drivers but it says that there is no compatible hardware on my comp to install the drivers or something. So now i am at the point where i don't know what to do. It says it requires a vga or dvi compatible moniter which my guess that is the problem? If so why was i never informed about this before, what is a vga or dvi compatible moniter? help would be mucho appreciated, thanks.

I assume you have uninstalled all the old video drivers, software, etc. for your old video card? And you used a driver cleaner program for your old video card? I'm also assuming all your BIOS settings are correct, and that the CMOS battery is fine. I also assume your power supply is fine (at least 300 watts with nice rails).

If yes to all, could a molex power connector not be connected? Other connections not connected?

First off, are you sure you even got an AGP card? From the looks of you're computer I didn't think it even had an AGP slot and the little reviews I found say it doesn't...

Either way, look around the bios and see if there's an option to disable the onboard video. Or, if it is in fact PCI, see if you can find something about the display device order(PCI should be first in this case) My guess is the computer was working fine just still showing video out your original port...

my other video card was onboard and it is supposed to voerride the onboard stuff. My bios haven't changed in the last two years so that shouldn't be a problem. And i do not know what a smos battery is, i am guessing that is the battery on the motherbaord and i am pretty sure that is working. And i have a 350watt powersupply the vid card only requires a 300watt. and as far as a molex connecter? no idea what that is i am going to guess that is the green thing i plugged into my vid card that had a moniter outlit to plug my moniter into and i plugged all that stuff in. Didn't seem to work, is there any other things i need to connect to the vido card that i forgot? Is it possible my two year old moniter is not compatibale?

i didn't ge tthe correct info about my computer in my signature.
How do i access my bios?
I definitley have an agp slot, i already p[ugged the card into it and on the fron of the card box it says 8x agp. and also in requirements states that i need an agp slot. If pwoer was coming out of the original port then why is it when i plugged my moniter into the original port when the vid card was in, nothing happened.

I didn't say something might of changed in youre bios, I said you probably SHOULD change something. I'm still going on the notion that you don't have AGP... I take it you have the brown slot towards the top of your mobo, or are they all white?

im not a complete noob at computers i don't beleive. I have scanned my computer and it says 4x agp, this is not a gateway 310 series. I do have the brown slot above the white. And teh card fit into the agp slot. So i am pretty darn sure its not the agp thing. The only thing that makes sense to me is my montier is not vga compatibale (whatever that means). So to help you, yes i have the slot, and my scanners (2 of them) said it was 4x. And right above the slot on the mobo it says agp

once again: how do i get into my bios

and my moniter is a gateway ev730

OK, I replied before you posted that 2nd post, sorry... TO get to you're BIOS, it's normally DEL as you're system goes though post, but I don't know what Gateway's use. Look around during the POST, or maybe find a manual.

As for having AGP 4x, most all computers have that today even without the slot. What do you think laptops use? Very cheap computers will just have AGP 4x video but no slot. Now you see to talk like you have one, but what I don't understand is why do you say you have a 310 in your sig but then you tell me you don't have that computer

And I'm 100% sure the monitor will work. Trust me, if it's not VGA compatable, then you wouldn't be seeing much of anything today seeing as basically EVERYTHING on PC's are VGA based

Its official, i am a moron. I didn't plug the vid card into the power supply. I think someone in this post asked me that and i didn't realize what the cable was that they were talking about utill i started looking at my video card and saw this nice place for one of the PSU cables to plug in. Thanks for all the help guys.
