installing linux, no cd drive

I want to boot Ubuntu from a pen drive, but all the instructions I've found require you to burn it to a cd first...and my burner is not cooperating

can you just extract the ISO and then copy it to a pen drive?

There are minimalist (spelled right?) linux os' that can install from pen drives but I don't think Ubuntu is one. There may be something I don't know as I just started using linux.
