Installing new RAM

Hello everyone! I'm back with another question.
I'm running XP with 256mb of RAM and obviously things aren't great all-round. My motherboard has 2 DDR slots. I was wondering, can I just buy another 256mb stick and...stick it in or a 512? If not, I was concidering buying 2 512's of the same brand and type. Or Do I need Dual channel RAM to put in more than one stick at once?

Greatly appreciated

you have to make sure the ram is supported by your motherboard...just any stick won't do..like pc133..pc2700...pc3200 ect...if its supported then you can put any stick in a slot and it work they don't have to be dual channel and they don't have to be the same brand...before you get dual channel you need to make sure your motherboard supports dual channel

What are the benefits of Dual channel over non-dual channel?
EDIT:Would a motherboard support only one type of RAM? "like pc133..pc2700...pc3200"
or Several?
