Installing Vista Weird Problem

If you didn't end up with a flawed disk a lens cleaner for the optical drive and inspection of the disk itself for finger smudges and spots, scratched would be the first item. When going to install a new version of Windows like when Vista was first out I often delete the existing primary and create a new totally clean one to rule any problems that could come up when the installer is trying to copy the setup files to the drive.

If nothing is found wrong with the dvd then you may have to start looking at the drive itself to see the write heads in particular are giving up. Being unable to copy to the drive the installer would then simply revert back to the initial setup screen.

Besides the drive itself you may only need to swap the data cable for a new one if that's where the problem is. An intermittent cable won't help you any if there's a problem with a wire in that or it's not plugged in all the way.

deleted all partitions, formatted hdd and ran full chkdsk /r on the hdd so not the hdd shouldnt think. disc is imaculate..no marks at all.

suggestions anyone..

Since the drive has been found good the next step would be a lens cleaner for the optical drive being used or maybe even trying a substitute in case the lens is going there. It's also possible to get a bad install disk while not so likely.

First make sure you are running a dvd not simply cd type optical drive. XP came on cd-rs while Vista is now seen on dvd format. Each new windows gets more bloated with "goodies" and larger in size! With both types in use here that was seen fast when still reacting like it was a typical cd-r and seeing it run on the sata dvd drive in use.
