Installing Windows 7 (Various questions)

Currently using a unregistered “stupid PC store” windows 7 Ultimate on this PC and finally after 3year its starting to act up on me.

Im looking to install windows 7 Home Premium “Purchased” onto the system, but I first have a few questions I would like to ask.

I have been looking at the whole partition part when it comes to installing your OS for the first time.
Im seeing, reading and hearing so many different stories about the subject that its driving me insane.

http://partition.radified.com/
Thus far, I think this would be the best explanation.
I just question some of the supposed facts.

1. Is the outer rim of the platter actually the most responsive place on the HHD. Some say yes some say no.

2. When making your first partition, does the partition start at the inner or outer edge of the platter ? Can you change this mechanic, or is it generic, do some HHD differ ?

3. I have not found an article about it yet, but im sure its out there. When a partition is made, does the partition have the ability to move itself in a different position on the patter itself ?
The reasons I ask this question is because a lot of people are saying that the biggest reason to make partitions on a HHD, is that information will not spread itself all over the HHD. With HHD’s becoming bigger and bigger there is more room for the information to float around in. When making a partition, I would assume that the information stays somewhere within that partition (smaller partition better response time.) If the partition can move itself and the facts are true that the inner part of the platter is technically the slower part of the HHD, would the partition have the ability to move itself closer to the inner ring making the systems slightly less responsive ?

4. Currently my OS is on the 500GB HHD. Should I format my 320GB, partition it and use that for my OS and gaming ? Or would it even make a difference just installing my OS back on my 500GB with partitions ?

5. When using both HHD, should I have my OS on one HHD and play my game off the second HHD ? Both drives would be partitioned, with the OS and Games in the first partition of the HHDs. “Assuming the outer part of the platter is quicker and presuming that's where the partitions are first made.”

I realize that getting a SSD would be the best bet for the OS, but that's not really an upgrade I can currently afford. Unless someone can point me to a 75GB SSD for like $50.

Sorry for the long thread, and thank you very much for your time.

I don't know most of the answers, but I would say it really wouldn't make a real-world difference

4. I would install the OS on the 320GB so it would be easier to separate your games instead of having them all over the place.

5. Would not matter.

But why I am really responding to this thread is that you don't need to buy another windows copy.

First of all, what I'm gonna say is all completely legal since you genuinely own a windows 7 product key.

Download the windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and install it on a DVD. Voila. You have a clean install disk for windows 7. Install it and use the product key on your computer or your windows 7 diskcase. If you don't have either, use magicjellybean to get it.

Hope that helped!

I dont think it will work like that, the key on the back is usually registered as a one time use key. So using a disk with the OEM key provided on the back of your pc wont actually work as it has already previously been used. Also, just a heads up, I received an infraction a few years ago for suggesting to do this very thing so I would highly recommend removing the link:

There is a bump in your warning. It appears you were telling him to use a torrent site. That is expressly against the rules. However the mydigitallife downloads are genuine non torrented software. Literally ripped ,iso s from windows 7 disks. I have seen it offered as a source many times on here and no one has said anything about it yet. one of the mods put it on the http://www.computerforum.com/180799-freeware-list.html a while back too, under OS right below Ubuntu.

My understanding is that hosting a download of a microsoft OS is illegal regardless of intent. That also seemed to be the response I got from them when I emailed them as mentioned in that thread. Whats the difference between downloading an 'official untampered version' from a torrent site or the mydigitallife site? Its still downloading software illegally no matter what kind of package you wrap it in, but I could be wrong. Im just saying it aint worth getting an infraction over something stupid.

I am not sure, but I am 99% sure that if microsoft did not approve that they would have had it pulled already.

on top of it, if you look at the site, they are only hosting the location, like a map, they link to Amazon and Digital River's direct static download links.

I'm gonna clear this up right now, I hope...

Downloading the OS via torrents are illegal. If you look at the digital life link for the OS's, its actually from Digital River which is an online service for billing, usually this is how you pay for most of your online games and applications.

However, I'm not fully aware if OEM and upgrade license keys will work with the ISO download. I'm assuming this was only available for the full retail version. Maybe the key is what unlocks what version you have???. I really don't know. They don't explain too well.

If this was illegal, Digital River would be in a heap of trouble. I, myself have posted the link to the downloads. The links provided are for genuine versions of the OS as long as you have the correct license key.

All has been said, but its still worth a shot as opposed to buying a whole new windows. And if it doesn't work, a call to either Microsoft or the manufacturer of the computer with an explanation of your situation ("I am trying to reinstall windows, etc") and they might give you a new key or reactivate it.

Literally ripped ,iso s from windows 7 disks.
So are most movies/music/software on torrents :P

johnb thanks for clarifying.

Ive tried in the past calling Msoft about releasing a new key when trying to reinstall an OEM machine and hit a brick wall. However, that was with XP so maybe things have changed but I kinda doubt it. If it works you will save a chunk of change though! So heres to hoping!

Thank you all for your somewhat insightful information with downloading windows.

I don't mean to be rude, disrespectful or arrogant, but none of this information is in regards to any of the questions I asked.

In the second line I clearly stated "Purchased" not "Purchasing."

To add clarity to my current Windows 7 Ultimate, it was installed on my PC before it was even on commercial shelves.
The key that I do have I assume is not legitimate, so im not willing to even touch the disk I was given.
Hence the reason I just purchased Windows 7 Home Premium.

I dont think it will work like that, the key on the back is usually registered as a one time use key.
Does this mean the key I just purchased is good for one use ?
I truly hope not, otherwise I would be very disappointing.
I know for a fact that now I own a legit disk and key I will reinstall window at least once a year.
Not like now where it has been around 3 years since installation.

No you can reinstall windows with the same key as many times as you want. The OEM version is tied to the motherboard you install it on so it can't be transferred to a new system. The upgrade and retail versions can be installed on any number of systems as long as the installation was removed from the prior system.

Awesome that's a relief thank you for your time.
Now if only some of these other questions could be answered :(
