Hello I working on building a computer and I recently ordered Microsoft Windows XP Home Upgrade with SP2 on accident. I have no old versions of windows just a fresh clean hard drive. Will the upgrade still work as a default operating system on my new hard drive or do I need to send it back and get just Windows XP Home cd. Thanks.

to use the upgrade you will first have to install another older OS, to upgrade from. So unless you are willing to do this you will have to return it and get a clean install version.

In most cases....if you happen to have a CD of an original Windows product, the upgrade will prompt you to insert the CD...that is all that is required. It will just verify that the CD is an original version of Windows and continue the install up your upgrade.

These 'most cases' musn't be very common becasue i've tried installing 2000 and XP(home and Pro) upgrades but the Bios refuses to recognise them as bootable Cd's!

do you have it set in bios to boot from cd first? or maybe there is something wrong with your cd rom drive.
