installing windows xp home

hi my father has got a compaq computer with a 80gb hdd in it the hdd is nearly full and i was wondering if i bought a bigger hdd could i install windows
using the backup cds i created from his pc because his pc came with windows on a partition and a program to back windows up onto cds
