I am using my present assembled pc since 2010.this one is a gigabyte h55m-s2, i3 processor.till 2013 i was using xp.right now i have a dual boot windows xp and 7.previously ,before 2010 i had a mercury mobo with xp. The mercury mobo short circuited within 3yrs of usage and i didnt care to repair it.
I dont know how long my present pc will last, though it comes with an ULTRA DURABLE label.
I am thinking about building another pc tower within next two years.
Now before 2013 i burned a few dvds as backup.I am from a third world country and back in the time dvds were not cheap and readily available compared to present day.You could still buy floppy disk till 2008.Hence i squeezed as much data as i could say about 4.28gb to 4.31 gb in my old dvds.Free space in xp would be shown as 4.4-5ish gb when you insert a blank dvd.i used cyberlink udf system that came with my lg dvd writer.
After i installed windows 7 the free space for a blank dvd was 4.3 gb.So when i inserted my old dvds win7 couldnt read all the files or at times couldnt read the files at all.but xp still could read and copy them.I also tried opening my dvds with cyberlink in win7.it could show me the file names only.couldnt read or copy them.
Now xp is no longer supported by modern mobo.so my question is it possible to install win xp in modern mobo just to read my precious old dvds.I DONT NEED THE AUDIO, VIDEO DRIVER, NEITHER USE THE INTERNET WITH IT.i just want to read the dvds.i also made a live xp dvd , just in case i cant install.but it takes time for live dvds to bootup compared to hard disk installation s.

Has anybody installed xp presently in a brand new machine just for fun?

Why do you need to install XP to read the data on the DVD's? Any OS should be able to do that. You don't need special software to do it. You should just be able to pop the disc in and view the contents in Explorer.

Please read my post carefully.i said i popped it in win7.i also popped it in a friends running ubuntu 15.i dont know why new os wont read my dvd.
However i just want know to one thing clearly so that i can sleep in peace.HAVE ANYONE TRIED INSTALLING OLD OSES LIKE XP/2000/98 IN A NEW MACHINE AND BEEN SUCCESSFUL? IF U R USING A VIRTUAL MACHINE THEN PLEASE DONT MENTION IT.By new i mean say i bought a mobo that says it only supports anything above win7/win8.I DONT NEED AUDIO AND VIDEO DRIVERS BUT JUST THE OS BOOTING FROM HDD.I have backed up some and in the process of backing up the rest to my external hdd.But i think any experienced user knows how fragile hdd can be compared to dvds.External ssds are more permanent and robust alternative, but the part of the world i am from they cost a fortune.

Stick the SATA controller in ATA mode and go. You shouldn't have an issue unless it starts begging for drivers.

have anyone of you tried the methods you just mentioned?
