Installing XP from an external cd-drive?

I just recieved my new subnote, with external cd-drive. But I'm having some problems installing XP via the external drive. When i put in the cd, the pre-install procedure goes on as it should (formating the drive, copying some files to the HD, and then restarting). But then it starts up a "Boot Scriptor" (looks like a command promt). I've tried to use the command "boot 0x80" where 0x80 is the hexdecimal number for a HD (that's what the example said in the help text). But it responded with "drive 0x80 does not appear bootable" (the same happens for 0x70, 0x60 and so on)...

If I start the BIOS, I can choose a boot device, but since the cd-drive is external, it can't find it. When i choose "CD-ROM" the screen goes black for a second, and then returns to the list of boot-devices. The same happens if i choose HD and Flobby. I can also choose PXE, but since I don't know how to use it, I want to try that as a last resort....

Can anyone please help me!!?? It's very frustrating to not be able to use your brand new laptop, becouse of something like this!!

Thanks!

In the BIOS, is there an option to boot from USB (assuming that your external drive is plugged in via USB)? Legacy USB support/device check?

This might sounds wrong, but

I had the same sort of problem so what I done was
1. Format a hard disk
2. Fit hard disk in another PC. Use other pc and install windows 98 on it
3. Fit hard disk on pc with external cd drive
4. Install xp on new pc

Yes, there is a Legacy USB device, but that is already enabled...
I've discovered another problem, that might have somthing to do with it. In the BIOS, it says Main Hard Drive = 0 MB... But the harddisk i 40 Gb...
The strange thing about my problem is, that I've alredy had contact with both the HD and the external drive. As i said in the first post, I've both formated the HD (with the windows installation, whitch says the HD is 40 Gb, as it should), and copied files to the HD for the CD. It's after the restart things go wrong. I can't boot from the HD as i should...

Very frustrating!! But I'm thankful for all the help I can get!!

Yes, when I format the hd I have to specify a partition, and how big it should be. I've tried both to do one big, two small ones, one small and the remaining to be unspecified diskspace. After partitioning all of them, i checked the BIOS, and nothing changed.
