Installing xp from thumb drive?

So the other day I had the bright idea of installing vista over xp. I managed to install vista via my thumb drive, but now I can't figure out how to do it with XP. I've searched and tried a ton of different things. Any ideas?

I've tried many times, but I've only succeeded with Vista and Windows 7.

BUT, a friend of mine recently sent me this, but I haven't tried it yet.

I would make an image file of your OS installation, then image the external device with it. You could also play around with PE (preinstall envrionments) and try it that way.

What is your higher goal here, or are you just doing this for fun?
