ok guys I broke down and bought a "how-to" book that contains Suse linux. What are some of the things that I can do with this OS other than surf the web? Can I install programs like Norton and webroot for protection? Is there a website that have these kinds of programs for free? Where do I go for everything linux??

rpm.pbone.net
and
klik.atekon.de

will both get you software that will run on Suse. RPMs will install via Yast, Kliks install on their own.

The range of software that is available on Windows is available on Linux as well. I only need my Windows box for games.
You should not need Norton, as Linux has very few viruses that run on it. You may want a firewall like this one:
firestarter

Camper's links will get you started as well.

as far as "protection" goes you really dont need anything other then a firewall for linux, because as far as I know thats all they make. And also you can install games, natively though linux only supports the Doom, Quake, and Unreal Tournament series, but for other games your gonna have to install a program like Wine. Oh, and btw inorder to play games make sure you have your video card's drivers installed.

Wow thanks so much for all the links! I've bookmarked them all and I will try them when I get home. I'm really happy and surprised with Suse and linux. I don't think I'll go back to Windows except for my gaming machine (the one in my sig and the one I'm on now) because like you all said, games usually run only on Windows.

I have a question though...why are there not many viruses or spyware on Linux?

Linux was always designed to be more conscious of security than windows.
With Linux, a virus would need to run as root, which would need a password; in Windows you are always running as Admin (root) so viruses can do whatever they want.
Windows has "ActiveX" in IE which acts as a gateway for malware/worms.
Also, If you are a hacker, what are you going to try and write viruses for? The 90% of cptrs that have Windows or the 10% that have Mac/Linux? Windows is the juiciest target!

I had no idea! I mean it makes sense when you explain it but wow how smart was/were the guy(s) who invented linux?? It's nothing short of a fantastic OS. I've just been learning about how to use it everyday, and everyday I put down the book amazed!

Linux was developed as a variant of Unix, by Linus Torvalds in the 1990s. And yes, he is very smart. Much smarter than some other successful geeks I could name. :P
Unix was designed by AT&T in the '60s to run on mainframes, and security was of prime importance to them, and it has filtered down to the Linux that we use today.

I should also recommend Tux Magazine a free monthly PDF magazine aimed at Linux newbies. It is very well done and you wil learn a lot from it. Highly recommended!;)

And of course Linus Torvalds is Finnish. :P For your gaming needs, you can use WineX or buy Cedega.

Ok I subscribed to that magazine! Thanks guys for all your help! If there is anything else cool that I should know about please let me know.
