Intel Duo Core 2 vs Intel Duo Core Quad

depends what you want it for...the quad core won't give you substantial performance in games since most games won't be utilizing the 4 cores. If you're running alot of work station stuff, i'd see the benefits of a quad core, but otherwise, dual cores perform better in gaming.

Like said above, depends on what you want to do with it. By 2.6 and 2.4 if you mean the E6750 vs. Q6600. Theres like a hundred bucks difference between them. If you need the extra performance and last a little longer down the road, the Q6600 would be worth the extra 100 bucks. But then again the E6750 is no slouch either and its 100 bucks cheaper. Like said before it all depends on needs.
 
4 cores vs 2 cores. :D

4 cores are more futureproof. Faster, and if the programs support it, there are performance gains than from 2 cores. The only game I've heard so far of 4 core utilization is HL2. Thus, other games will perform better with 2 cores than the Quad due to the coding only being made for 2 cores. With 2 core utilization, we'd be looking at:

E6850 - 2x 3GHz Q6600 - 2x 2.4GHz

And thus the Core 2 Duo wins. (In this case).

(Go for the Quad)
 
im a noob when it comes to certain computer stuff.iluvpenguins.how did you get your intel E6550 from 2.33 to 3.01?i believe its called overclocking?i dunno

yup, overclocking. Theres many guides on how to overclock, once you get the idea of it, its rather simple. The E6750 should be a pretty solid cpu even down the road. Mind you that(atleast in my opinion) CPU's don't get outdated as fast as other things like video cards. If you're looking for a computer that'll last a while, then i guess the quad core would be best...though theres going to be much better quad cores coming out so how future friendly the Q6600 will be is unknown to me. I still personally believe the E6750 will be the best choice of the two..and besides..when it does come to the point where quad cores are a must, there will be a completely new lineup making the Q6600 irrelevant.

so heres the setup im going with for my next computer.




Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6750 (4MB L2 Cache,2.6GHz,1333 FSB)

256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS With HDMI

4GB Dual Channel DDR2 800Mhz

640 dual drive(2x320) GB SATA 7200RPM Hard Drive

and a nice 20" LCD Flat Widescreen :)

The new quads are being pushed even further from planned release. I say go for the Q6600 and learn to overclock. Make sure you get a motherboard with north bridge being P35 or X38, and a decent aftermarket cooler for your CPU. People, including me, on the forum will tell you how to easily get that Q6600 to 3.0GHz+ safely, thus making it very powerful and future-proof. The dual core processors are the ones that will be low-end soon, quads are going to be the next standard.

Is this going to be a gaming computer? If so, i suggest just settling with 2gb of ram and spending more on the graphic card, get alteast an 8600GTS for gaming.
 
i dont use the computer too much.only games i play are like warcraft 3,Command +Conquer,might get the new starcraft game coming soon if not out already+various army games.so i wont need a huge graphics card.i might upgrade it down the road.


How much should i spend on a prebuilt computer like that that comes w/ a 20inch screen?
