Intel Extreme Graphics 2 ?

Hey could anyone tell me about how capable (incapable) in terms of performance, the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 used in laptops is? I mean is it comparable to a Geforce 4 MX 440 for example?

Hey I am sure one of you at least knows the answer. I could not find any review in terms of performance on the internet and I need to buy a laptop for my mom. As long as the graphics are comparable to a Geforce 4 MX, then I will be sattisfied.

i think intel extreme graphics uses your computer ram for its video memory so it is not good unless you are on a budget. unless you have a fair amount of ram i wouldnt want one, i have one on one of the hp computers and didnt mind cuz i had 1024mb ram.

Actually not all but in his case yes.

I agree though it would help to know what type of gamer he is, but I can ensure you jancz3rt that most modern games won't run on Intels Extreme Graphics 2 chip.

Most will, just not on great settings

You should be able to do some gaming. I can play Rome Total War just fine with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chip and 512mb of RAM.

I do have all the video seettings on lowest quality though.

Its comparable to a TNT2 M64 ok maybe thats not true

Most will, just not on great settings

Unless you are thinking on the scope of all games ever made (at which point ill call you out for being stupidly picky ), than tweaker is right: most modern games WONT run on that setup. Even if he's wrong, if you look ahead a few months its fair to say most games will be using shaders .... which the intel setup wont be able to work with)

If you consider Rome Total War to graphically modern (IMO its a generation back)

That chip doesn't even support T&L.

If the "2" haven't changed that..

The Intel Extreme Graphics 2 packs a whopping 2 pixel pipes.
Core = 266Mhz
Memory = 200MHz (system memory clock speed)
Pipecount = 2x0
Geometric Capabilities = None (no T&L, no vertex shaders as noted)
API Support = DirectX8 a la GeForce4MX (i.e., 24/26 methods supported ... this is an educated guess)

Interesting, they claim an onboard solution makes use of an AGP bus...

Does anyone know the difference between the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chip and it's predecessor (Intel Extreme Graphics, not 2)? If I can play a game on Intel Extreme Graphics 2 do you think I would be ok with just Intel Extreme Graphics?

Depends on the game but anything that requires IEG2 wont play on IEG as its a significant improvement in performance (arguably twice)
