Intel I7

As im sure you are all aware the intel i7 CPU arrived a while back and was meant to come to us as a revolutionary processor with amazing capabilities.

Is this true? I think its just a marketing pull to take our money away from us.

Intel reintroduced hyper-threading that was used on the previous pentium 4's, which isnt all that revolutionary. And this isnt all that good anyway because to feel the benfits of hyper threading the programmes must be written for it.

They used QPI as appose to the FSB, this is good but is just copied from the AMD's equally effective HyperTransport technology.

I wont be upgrading to the I7, you need a LGA 1366 board and DDR3 ram which at the moment is way to expensive.

Whats your opinions of the I7?

From what I've read about it and seen the i7 are killer processors. The reconfiguration of the architecture has helped its speed. The new mobo’s can support up to 24GB (if I’m not mistaken) now that is a hell of a lot of ram.

Personally I going to wait till Windows 7 is out before I upgrade this is due to two reasons firstly windows 7 looks really good and secondly I should be able to save some cheddar till them....lol.

So the next rig i build will centre on an i7, with either the Asus P6T6 WS Revolution or Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte EX58-UD4P.

So overall I think they a damn good processors.

Hm, but the AMD Phenom 2 lookes good and shares some similar qualities.

Its significantly cheaper and can be used with the AM2+ boards and DDR2.

To be pretty honest I havnt read much about the Phenom, so once I do then ill be more educated to be able to answer this.

However I really do like the sound of the DDR3 rams.

They have a massive L3 cache and are incredbile for overclocking. Ive heard that the 3.0ghz model can be overclocked to 4.0ghz and still be stable

I agree intel have phenomenal (pun intended) overclocking capabilities but out of the box value and performance the phenom winds hands down.

Anyway not sure if you heard but amd managed to overclock their new phenom 2 to 6.6GHZ, a record.

I thought the idea of this thread was discussing Intels i7 not about how much better you think AMD are?

Costs 200-300 quid for a decent 1366 motherbaord.
And about 100 for 2GB of DDR3.

Then 500 quid for the damn processor itself( the one for overclocking that your talking about).

Thats about 800 quid just to be equipped with something similar to the Phenom 2 of a mere 200 price tag.

Core 2 Duo can compete very well against Phenom II

But AMD doesn't have anything to compete with i7

The difference between my old q6600 and the i7 is amazing. AMD has not made anything since the old 939 socket days that has been able to compete (on the higher end, gaming) with Intel. If money is a concern AMD is for you but if you want the best performance i7 is the winner hands down.

The 1366 socket is the next step and prices are not as high as people make them out to be. Obviously DDR2 is going to be cheaper but is also on the way out so it is a waste of money because within 6 months or so most new products will be DDR3 only. There are X58 motherboards for around $170 now and i7 920 for about $250. Also just want to add that you get what you pay for and right now the best bang for the buck setup is an i7.

You would probably happier with a I7 build long term.I have the Asus p6t6 revolution board and it is working well so far .It is probably overkill for what I need though . It has 3 full bandwidth PCI express x16 slot and the 1 GTX 295 is plenty for me now.
