1. Its not new .. certainly not to the civilian market at least :)
2. Normal "civilians" wont be using Itanium2 setups because (a) im guessing they are on the order of $5000USD per chip (b) 96% of computer users out there dont know how to manage the OS/environment for that platform -- no they dont use windows :p and (c) Itanium2s are really kinda like a big brother to the Xeons and they are used similarly ... in clusters
3. I think the Itanium2s are the only generic chip of their class (i cant remember if they share that class or not with Alpha setups or not, i dont think so but thy are similar in implementation)
