well i have an old 1997 motherboard with a socet 7 processor slot. i got an amd 266mhz processor. but the problem is my computer wont start with it, can anyone help?

works fine with my intel p1 though

Well does the motherboard support it? What model motherboard is it?

Also, how fast was the Pentium you had in there?

I can tell that your AMD was an AMD K-6 maybe a K-6 II casue my old computer is a Socket Super 7 processor. Maybe the processor is fried. Is your memory pushed in all the way? Maybe your motherboard isn't stable. Latley mine wasn't thats why I built a new PC (the one in the sig).

ok

yes the mem is in, the model # is Atlas PCI Pentium ISA

I know what i am doing when it comes to building, the amd is a K6. i did not think it was compatable but i wanted to see if the K6 would work anyway.

yea there were 3 companies cyrix, intel and amd. cyrix was acually the first 32-bit cpu but intel and amd's marketing techniques just just blew cyrix away but think cyrix joined up with sis and via and they make those low end chipsets. Before even around Pentium III all the processors used very similar technology so they were switchable.

Wasn't the K-6 the first one that wasn't interchangeable (but it still used the same type of socket)? I thought I read that, but I should probably look it up before saying more.

EDIT: Nevermind, the K6 should work with an intel motherboard.

thanks for all the history, i never even knew that. but i pulled out my manual and i pulled jumper J14 and it got to 3.1v and now the AMD K-6 works fine. thanks for all your help.
