Hi, I have seen two P4 Prescott CPUs from a computer shop, model 530 and 531. They are both socket LGA775, but model 531 is running at 64bit, so may i ask what is it? Thanks

Am not sure what you asking.

If you asking is the 531 64bit then yes. The 5x1 series will be 64bit for intel.

If you asking what does 64 bit means then it means you can run a 64 bit operating system with it to operate in 64 bit mode. It also still can run in 32 bit without a problem.

So do you mean that if i am using windows 2003 (which is 64bit windows i think) for my new computer, the model 531 is better than model 530??

p.s. i am not sure whether model 530 is running at 64bit as well???

530 is not 64 bit. If you want to run windows xp profesional x64 you MUST have a 64 bit cpu. it simply would not work on a 32 bit cpu.

where can you buy one 531?? Can you put this into a oem machine that doesn't support 6xx series, but the motherboard is supposed to support, but canno without bios update

As mgoldb2 said the 5X1 P4 series is EM64T enabled, it just doesn't have 2MB cache or the other extra features of the 6XX series. The BIOS needs to support EM64T for it to work, just like for the 6XX.

to summarise above
all 5x1 = EM64T (64 bit enabled)
if 5xx series but not of type 5x1 the = 32bit
all 6xx series = EM64T (64 bit enabled) + they have 2mb L2 cache

If you want to run win xp x64 then you need 64bit enabled
You can run not 64bit windows (i.e normal wn xp) on a 64bit cpu without any probs

if you upgrade to a 64bit intel cpu you will need to update your bios unless you buy all but the very latest boards

Is it possible for the manufacturer of proprietary systems to release a bios update on a mobo that can support 6xx series processors so em64t can be enabled?
