Hi, our organization recently is interested in looking in editing HD video and though would like to ask members here what would be a better setup.

First Option:
Intel Xeon E5310
Asus DFBF
2Gb Of Ram

Second Option:
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700
Gigabyte P965
4Gb Of Ram

Our aim is to get the most efficient computer in encoding, processing and stability. So can anyone advise us on the pro and con plus with setup would you recommend? Thanks.

I have two more questions to ask also. Can anyone inform me whether both chips are two chips two cores or one chips four cores? And what is the different between a server motherboard and a normal cpu motherboard?

Thanks. Appreciated.

The QX6700 is far better, and it also has twice the RAM. The E5310 runs at 1.6Ghz, while the QX6700 runs at 2.66Ghz. And both CPU's are two dual-core dies, so it's not a "true" quad-core.

The pros of the first system is that it costs less (I hope).

The pros of the second option are that it has a much faster processor, and it can be overclocked much easier (since it's an enthusiast CPU), as well as having twice the RAM.

A normal desktop motherboard is designed more towards home use, gaming, and other aspects, which is why it has alot more CPU and RAM tweaking options in the BIOS, and why they usually have one or more PCI-E x16 slots.

Overall, I would definitely go with the second option, but how much difference is there in price?

One more question, should Xeon be more stable than Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 given it is a server chip? Just one of the question that pop up in my mind.

QX6700 is much better

But this doesn't make any difference

The QX6700 is about twice the speed of E6700 in multi-threaded applications

Well that is hard to say the qx6700 is a high performance 'enthusiast' processor as stated before and the server is also high performance, although a different sort. The server is probably best choice for continuous and strenuous activities, however the qx6700 should perform and exceed expectations and be plenty stable. I mean video editing is demanding, but I guarantee you the testing they do is more so. I would go with the better processor, or the faster one in this case.

There is no much difference in price. All around the same.
Then definitely get the second option.

They will both be stable if left at the stock clocks, however if you do plan to overclock (which I doubt since you seem to care alot about stability), then the xeon may be a bit more stable when overclocked.

But this doesn't make any difference
Do you mean it doesnt make a difference if a quad-core has two dual-core dies, or a single quad-core die? It actually does make a difference, while not huge. Since when you have two dual-core dies, both need to communicate via the FSB, while in a true quad-core they are all inter-connected, so they dont need to use the FSB to talk to each other core.
