I am looking at getting a new laptop and it has been a while, I notice that they are the new i3, i5 and i7 cpu's. I no nothing about them but when it says like i3 does that mean like a tri-core? And will the battery life on a laptop with a 2.1 i3 be a whole lot different then a 2.1 dual core? Thanks for any help.

i3, i5, and i7 are just names that don't have a particular direct meaning to their cpu. In terms of performance the i7 is the best, then i5, and then i3. The i3 are dual cores with a graphics processor built onto it. i5 can be dual core or quad cores depending on the cpu. i7's are quad cores at the high end and offer the best performance at a high cost.

The 2.1ghz i3 you asked is a dual core cpu. What is the other dual core you are trying to compare the i3 to?

Im a just trying to figure out the battery life on a hp laptop with a 12 cell battery that uses that cpu and knowing what kind of cpu helps with that.

The i3 in every setup is a dual-core with hyper-threading, but no turbo boost. It will outperform a core 2 duo of the same clock speed. I think it uses less power as well.
