Internet Connection Issues

Hopefully someone out there can help me with this.

I am not sure how this has suddenly happened but I can not access certain websites at the moment on my home PC. The process seems completely randon, some websites are ok, some are not, i don;t see any difference between any of them. I have read on previous posts that this could be the work of some form of Malware, but the links to the possible solutions do not seem to work. I spent the weekend searching for help on this but all webiste, like this one, were uncontactable on my home pc, it's almost like whatever is ailing my computer knows where i can get help from and bars me from entering the sites!

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

What is your browser telling you? i.e. connection failed or refused stuff like that. Are you getting any error messages? Anything?

Can not remember explictly ( sorry at work at the moment) but it is like it can not find the web address. i don't think it's a security issue as I have not had any in the past. I'll try again this evening and let you know tomorrow exactly what is being said

Sounds like something's messing with your hosts file.
Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and check the hosts file.

The message I get is "Can not display page".

What websites I managed to get onto last night suggested that the host file had been played around with; mentioning the same directory as Buzz does. It also said that I should only have had one file in this directory..........so being the novice that I am, I deleted the excess (all the wern't called Hosts)...........and now I can not boot my PC up; not even in Safe mode. It gets hung with the nice windows XP screen, I can see my mouse cursor, but it won't develop into the log on screen. I have looked at my PC at work and realise that there are 5 files in this folder, not one as was mentioned on the website I looked at. I have opened all of these files in Notepad and copied this into a word document, printed it off, and will compare with my home pc this evening. Trouble is now, I can't log in.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to get my PC to boot up...feeling like a bit of a knob at the moment?

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

So you deleted everything from the etc folder? Can you get to the safemode menu? If you can, try "last known good configuration".

yes, unbeleivably. everything that the website said, clearly i mis understood. i can not get into safe mode, and last known configuration doesn't work either.i have just been informed that i can do a disc boot? so i will try to re-store from this tonight
