Internet connection keeps dropping

Hello, i need help.

A couple of years ago, we bought an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, Model A1143 (Router). The internet had not always been great downstairs. Recently, we purchased a Motorola SURFboard SB6121 cable modem.
It seems that for so many hours, we have to reboot the Apple router to connect back to the internet.

FACTS:
Router & Modem are placed upstairs
Router by Apple (2006 model - purchased in 2008)
Modem by Motorola, purchased 4 months ago
Home is approximately 8,540 square feet
We use both MAC & Windows computers
We do not have password protection on our internet (just found out)
We currently have Comcast Xfinity, the Extreme 50 (50 mbps)

ISSUES:
Internet connection keeps dropping.
We always have to reboot the apple router to restore the internet.

QUESTIONS:
1. Do I need to purchase a new router?
2. I live by the hillside, is it possible that the reception is not good there? (All neighbors are not experiencing my problem)

3. Do I need to move my router and modem downstairs?
4. Can it be that I need to protect my internet service? (All homes around our area has their own service, not sure if they will tap into mine)
5. Is the router and modem compatible?
6. Even though I have a MAC pc, can I get rid of the apple router and a different brand?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

liz

Try connecting directly to the modem and see if the connection drops. If so, then its a modem/isp problem. If not, then its definately a router issue and needs to be replaced.
